Pittsburgh Steelers Rumors: Elvis Dumervil On Their Radar?

When things look bleak there can still be some good news for the Pittsburgh Steelers, even if it’s just a rumor. And the latest rumor is the recently released pass rush specialist Elvis Dumervil is drawing interest from several teams, including the Steelers. There are some problems with this being legit but when you consider just how good Dumervil is, it’s more than fascinating.

Dumervil became available when his agent failed to get paperwork faxed to the Denver Broncos by the waiver deadline and forced the hand of the Broncos front office, releasing him in order to save themselves a huge bonus due to Dumervil. With a player like Dumervil suddenly on the market, it only makes sense that teams are doing to dip their toes in the pool (so to speak) and see what it would take to sway Dumervil from simply returning to Denver.

According to some unconfirmed reports, the Steelers are one of those teams. The rub with that is the Steelers aren’t really in a position to make a big offer to Dumervil. Their salary cap situation is tenuous to say the least, so if they were to really be serious about Dumervil they would have to work some serious magic with some more contract restructures and possible some unexpected player cuts just to fit him in.

But would he be worth it? Obviously, I couldn’t endorse the Steelers cutting loose quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but beyond him there aren’t many players on this roster I wouldn’t sell out for Dumervil. He’s an amazing pass rusher who’s proven people wrong his entire career. He would be an absolute terror opposite linebacker Lamarr Woodley in that aggressive 3-4 defense. but the reality is this is likely wishful thinking unless the Steelers could magically make several million dollars in cap room suddenly appear.
