Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Are Cowboys Reuniting with a Former Wide Receiver?

Alan Maglaque-USA TODAY Sports

For the past two years the Dallas Cowboys have gone into the season looking for a third wide receiver for their passing game. In the 2011 season, Laurent Robinson stepped up and became the Cowboys most productive receiver, establishing an instant connection with quarterback Tony Romo.

Last season the Cowboys didn’t have such luck in finding a receiver who brought the 853 yards and 11 touchdowns like Robinson did, but they did find players with plenty of potential. Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley proved they were more than capable of taking on bigger roles in 2013 and the Cowboys will give them every opportunity to earn more playing time.

However, the development of these receivers may not stop the Cowboys from taking another look at Robinson, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars a few days ago. According to Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones, the team hasn’t ruled out bringing Robinson back.

“We got to look at the big picture with Laurent,” Jones said. “He had some injuries that we’re going to be doing our homework on and be going from there.”

This is the right approach for the Cowboys to take; to keep their young receivers and develop them further, but also keeping an eye on other players that can help your team get better. Robinson signed a huge contract with the Jags last season but never produced because of injuries, which included more than one concussion. It’s also hard to ignore the chemistry Robinson had with Tony Romo, so there is nothing wrong with the Cowboys “doing their homework” as Jones says.

The Cowboys have plenty of young receivers capable of stepping up and playing a bigger role in the offense in 2013 but if last year proved anything, it’s that you can never have enough depth on your roster. Doing your homework and exhausting every option you have just makes sense and the Cowboys appear to be doing that with Robinson.
