Denver Broncos May Be Moving On From Elvis Dumervil Soon

The Denver Broncos, after having proposed a new deal to Elvis Dumervil, may now find they need to look at other options after the defensive end is seemingly not too happy with their offer.

According to the Denver Post, Dumervil “is expected to line up visits with teams in the next 48 hours.” Well if that is the case, it is obvious that executive vice president of football operations John Elway will have to look at a couple of aging veterans to fill the team’s need.

Free agent defensive ends John Abraham and Dwight Freeney, the most talked-about replacements, are planning on meeting with the team on Thursday. These players would not necessarily be an upgrade from Dumervil on the pass rush, but very well may provide a better run defense than what the Broncos All-Pro end has given them over the years. Their deals would also be relatively cheap compared to that of Dumervil as well.

With the acquisition of DT Terrance Knighton and the re-signing of DT Kevin Vickerson, the Broncos defensive line has become more stout against the run. If Elway can add one more run-stuffer who also gives them a pass rush, then the Broncos just might have what they are looking for to get to the next level.

Abraham has 122 sacks over his 13 NFL seasons but will be turning 35 this spring. Freeney has recorded 107.5 sacks over 11 seasons and is two years younger at 33. While both of these players are getting up there in age, the Broncos focus is for 2013 only.

With QB Peyton Manning on a limited time frame to win a Super Bowl, it may not be a bad idea to bring in a dual threat in contrast to Dumervil’s singular option of only a pass rush.

A move like this would also open up the pass rush lane for LB Von Miller to attack from the edge better, with DE Derek Wolfe coming from the opposite side. So while it would be a shame if Dumervil was to go to another team, the Broncos may not necessarily be hindered by his absence.

Both Abraham and Freeney would bring a veteran presence and ability to win now, and Elway has clearly noted with his recent free agent moves that it is all about this season. Hopefully, the Broncos can get their man sooner rather than later and move on from the fiasco that led to this situation.

Rant” below about the Broncos entertaining Abraham and Freeney as opposed to bringing back Dumervil.
