New Orleans Saints Add Depth to Special Teams with Will Herring Signing

Will Herring

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Veteran linebacker Will Herring re-signed with the New Orleans Saints for a one-year deal. The Saints cut Herring earlier in the off-season because they did not want to pay his $1.6 million contract. Although contract details have not been released, it is safe to assume that the Saints brought Herring back for the veteran minimum.

Herring’s signing is not a huge deal for the Saints, but it was a good depth signing. He usually only sees playing time with the special teams, but has proven to be a valuable contributor. Last season with the Saints, Herring appeared in all 16 games and recorded 13 tackles with a career-high two forced fumbles.

Herring will not be a huge impact player but he will provide depth and continuity to the Saints’ special teams. This off-season it appears that the Saints are making the special teams a priority.

In addition to Herring’s signing, the Saints have also signed wide receiver Courtney Roby, long snapper Justin Drescher and linebacker Ramon Humber. All four players appeared on the special teams last season, and with all of them returning, the Saints’ special teams should not miss a beat. The Saints have quietly made wise acquisitions this off-season and bringing Herring back was a good, low-risk move.

Herring is obviously past his prime, but he is still a smart player that understands the Saints’ system. Furthermore, he will provide some veteran leadership as he could mentor some of the younger players. All in all, Herring’s signing was a smart, safe move for the Saints and he will provide the team with depth when needed.
