With the Atlanta Falcons in need of some pass-rushers, Osi Umenyiora is a name that keeps coming up. There’s no denying that the 31-year old has lost a step over the past couple of years, but it doesn’t mean his years of solid production are over.
Coming off a season where he hit new lows, fans might be wondering – why bring him on?
Umenyiora only started in four games last year, and also only recorded six sacks (his lowest total since 2006). But, he’s a player that historically always comes back after bad seasons. On three other occasions, Umenyiora has put double digit sacks on the board, following seasons in which he only recorded single digit sacks. Plus, we all know a good change of pace can do a player wonders.
The kicker? Umenyiora lives in Atlanta, and wants to play for the Falcons. He recently expressed this on a local radio show:
“New York fans definitely expect a lot out of you because of their history. There was nothing better than to be able to win there. The only thing I can think of that would be better than being able to win in New York would be to be able to win here in Atlanta. We’ll see how that plays out. Hopefully, it works out in a positive direction.”
So if you’re the Falcons, why not sign him? He fills a need on the team, and he wants to be there. On top of all that, he should be affordable. Last year he made $6 million, and there’s no way he’ll get that kind of money from Atlanta. If he truly wants to be there, he should take a pay cut.
Umenyiora did visit the team last week, so we’ll find out soon if this partnership will happen. To me though, a deal seems imminent.
