The San Diego Chargers placed a $1.3 million tender on former St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danario Alexander and another team has until April 19 to match this deal or offer more money to him.

Alexander ranked first on San Diego’s roster in receiving yards per game, tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions, ranked second on the team in receiving yards and third in the NFL in yards per reception. San Diego ranked 22nd in the NFL in receiving yards per game and 30th in yards per reception, so the Lighting Bolts would be worse without Alexander.

San Diego signed former Jacksonville Jaguars CB Derek Cox to a four year deal this month which was an important move because the other cornerbacks on their roster combined for eight career starts. Marcus Gilchrist will more than likely start alongside Cox when the 2013 season begins.

San Diego’s offensive line was horrible in 2012, allowing 49 sacks (ranked fourth in the league), so the front office is expected to choose an offensive lineman in round one of the draft.

If another team signs Alexander to a tender and San Diego’s front office does not match the deal, they will be left with a decision to make going into the draft because they lack depth at CB and WR.

If Alexander is brought back, San Diego’s front office should choose a CB in round two of the draft because there could be enough receivers to improve on a terrible 2012 campaign. If another team signs Alexander, however, San Diego’s front office should go after a WR in round two because they may be able to get a solid CB in round three.
