Michael Huff’s Visit to Dallas Cowboys Has Multiple Implications
The Dallas Cowboys apparently are not planning to go into the 2013 NFL season with no experienced free safety on the roster. Free agent safety Michael Huff reportedly is meeting with the team Monday, which is a great sign for Cowboys fans, assuming the team is serious about signing him.
Huff grew up and played his high school football five miles from Texas Stadium and attended the University of Texas, so he’s no stranger to the Cowboys and likely grew up a Dallas fan. He’s no superstar, but Huff has recorded at least 56 tackles in each of his six full NFL seasons with the Oakland Raiders, which means he could help in run support as well as defending the pass.
Huff’s visit has more than one meaning, though; the Cowboys can’t sign him on Monday because the team has just $102,000 in salary cap space at the moment. On June 1, that number will automatically increase by $2 million thanks to the release of Marcus Spears, but that’s a long time from now. The fact Huff is meeting with Dallas now even further suggests the team is nearing a finalized contract extension with Tony Romo, which would instantly give the Cowboys plenty of salary cap space to sign Huff. Take that as you will, but it’s more than just a hunch.
A safety duo of Huff and Barry Church would give the Cowboys hope in keeping their defense relatively effective with the switch to the 4-3, Tampa 2 scheme this season. Both are great in run support and underrated pass defenders, so new Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would have a solid pair with which to work. If Huff is signed, Kiffin will get a free safety that’s a former No. 7 overall pick to pair with a strong safety who made his way as an undrafted free agent.
