Baltimore Ravens' Marcus Spears Exactly Right About Rob Ryan

Soon after Marcus Spears signed his free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens, he said exactly what should have been said by a member of the Dallas Cowboys‘ organization two months ago: Rob Ryan should not have been fired. Of course, it’s easy for a player just released by Dallas to share such an opinion, but maybe if a player still on the roster had said something earlier, Ryan would still be with the Cowboys.

Spears suggested what everyone else was thinking when Ryan got the boot: someone had to pay for the Cowboys’ failures, even if it wasn’t his fault. Indeed, if anyone should have been fired, it’s Dallas head coach Jason Garrett. However, it’s Garrett who is still stumbling around Valley Ranch while Ryan is long gone, so clearly the correct decision wasn’t made.

Now the Cowboys’ defense wasn’t superb in 2012, but it was way better than it had been in a long time and that was with a slew of injuries. Starters Barry Church, Sean Lee and Bruce Carter missed most of the season after being placed on IR while four other starters also missed significant time. Still, Dallas’ defense showed incredible promise, especially from the previous year when the players were still trying to learn Ryan’s complex scheme in his first season with the Cowboys.

It’s sad that it took yet another former player to point out the Cowboys’ failures before they’re really recognized as such, but it had to be said. Granted, it probably won’t make any difference whatsoever regarding Dallas’ future, but at least it makes one disgruntled fan a little happier knowing that someone of note has pointed out Jerry Jones‘ incompetence yet again.
