Tyrann Mathieu Set to Visit San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots

The Honey Badger is on the prowl, folks. Tyrann Mathieu, former cornerback of the LSU Tigers, is headed to formally visit the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots to try and make a lasting impression on coaches Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick.

The former Tiger was widely thought to be in the running for a Heisman Trophy at some point in his college career, but last season he was kicked off the team for violating team rules. Mathieu is the type of athlete that NFL defenses could be looking for, as he has a knack for coming up with the football.

Many believe Mathieu is strictly a slot corner, however there are others that think in the right scheme he can play a wide variety of cornerback positions. The 49ers could sure use help at cornerback at the moment, and have been rumored to be interested in trading for New York Jets disgruntled star Darrelle Revis. However, none of the rumors have appeared to come to any type of fruition this off season.

The Patriots did themselves a favor by trading for Aqib Talib last season, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but getting a playmaker like Mathieu would be yet another boost to their secondary.

While his draft stock has fallen tremendously, this is an advantage for teams in need of what many believe is an NFL-ready player in the secondary. A couple years ago Mathieu looked like a first round pick, but heading into this year’s draft that doesn’t appear to be the case.
