Nnamdi Asomugha: San Francisco 49ers Bolster Defense
Nnamdi Asomugha is headed to the bay. The San Francisco 49ers added to their already elite defense Tuesday afternoon by adding the All Pro cornerback on a one year deal. The contract is said to be worth up to $3 million.
Asomugha was being sought hard after by both the 49ers and the New Orleans Saints during this free agency period. Not shockingly, he preferred a defensive juggernaut over an offensive powerhouse.
After eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders and spending the past two years with the Philadelphia Eagles, it seems like Asomugha has the chance to finally be a part of a contender. His first year in Philadelphia looked as though he could attain a championship after being labeled “The Dream Team,” but that experiment failed embarrassingly for the Eagles.
Joining guys like Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis to name a few, Asomugha comes into a scheme that has Pro Bowl players galore. With 405 total tackles and 15 career interceptions while also being a lock down defender, he will fit right in with what the 49ers have been all about the past two years.
If Asomugha wants to resurrect his career from a pretty down season last year, he will have to show up big time. With the Eagles last year, he allowed an incredibly high passer rating of 120.6 – highly uncharacteristic of a player with his set of skills.
The biggest thing for Asomugha will be confidence in his ability to get it done defensively. Forgetting last season and moving on is the best option for him at this point. Physically he has the gifts to still be a great player in this league, he just needs to catch himself up now mentally. I have a feeling head coach Jim Harbaugh will have a few words with the 31 year old that could spark a flame within him to accomplish that task.
