New York Giants Taking a Look at Julian Edelman
New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman has quietly entered free agency, which isn’t good news for the wide receiver. Edelman has visited the New York Giants today and will visit with the Giants again tomorrow, which could mean he’ll sign a contract with them. NFL Network reports that it’s the first known free agency visit for Edelman, so teams certainly weren’t enamored with his skills.
Since Edelman hasn’t received much interest around the league, it shouldn’t be hard for the Giants to acquire him for close to the league’s minimum. Edelman was once looked at as former Patriots WR Wes Welker’s replacement in the slot. Welker’s status with the Patriots has been cloudy for the past couple of years, and it finally came to an end when he left the team and joined the Denver Broncos.
However, the Patriots quickly swooped in and signed for St. Louis Rams WR Danny Amendola. Amendola and Welker both attended Texas Tech University, and both have been compared to one another since Amendola came into the league. The Patriots are hoping Amendola can fill in nicely for Welker. After all, they did give him a five-year deal that some considered too much.
For the Giants, Edelman can be a cost-effective addition. If he signs, he’ll most likely compete with WR Jerrel Jernigan for playing time as the fifth wide receiver, and he can also see time in special teams as a punt returner. The Giants are most likely going to lose WR Domenik Hixon in free agency, but the Giants will still rely on WR Reuben Randle and RB David Wilson for returns.
This may not be a good move for Edelman personally, as there isn’t much room for him on the depth chart to make an impact. However, for the Giants, it can be a solid acquisition if they suffer from injuries.
