Denver Broncos’ Tight Ends: The Forgotten Receivers
Since Wes Welker signed with the Denver Broncos last month, it seems as if everyone has been trying to figure out how Welker, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas are going to perform together. It’s safe to say that all three of them are going to have great seasons provided they stay healthy, but there are two other players who are being overlooked.
As hard as it is to believe, there will be times when the opposing defense manages to cover all three of the Broncos’ receivers. That’s good for the defense, but there’s another problem in the middle of the field. The Broncos have two tight ends in Joel Dressen and Jacob Tamme who have made their living in the NFL as receiving tight ends.
So even in those rare instances when Welker, Decker and Thomas are covered, the chances are great that Dressen or Tamme is running free in the middle of the field. It is just impossible to cover the three outside receivers and still adequately cover the tight end dragging across the middle.
It’s also worth noting that Dressen and Tamme are above-average receivers even if they are not mentioned with the top tight ends. Dressen has great hands and the ability to run a multitude of routes that will exploit the middle of the field.
Tamme is a unique tight end who has the ability to beat you over the middle and exploit linebackers. He can also lineup in the slot and run deeper patterns and when he does that next season, he’s likely to be matched up versus a linebacker or a backup safety. Tamme is going to win those matchups almost every time.
It’s difficult to describe how hard it is going to be to defend the Broncos offense; there are just too many weapons, and Dressen and Tamme are often going to be forgotten. The problem for opposing defenses is that there is one person who won’t forget about the tight-ends — Peyton Manning.
