Matt Schaub Has Every Right to Believe Houston Texans Are Super Bowl Contenders

While there’s still plenty of time left in the offseason, it’s never too early for players to talk about favorites to contend for the Super Bowl. As for Matt Schaub, he’s already making claims the Houston Texans have what it takes to be serious contenders once again–which he has every right to think that way.

Look at the Texans last year and it’s clear if it wasn’t for their second-half slump–they could have easily made a run at the Super Bowl. In fact, Houston was arguably the best overall team in the first half of the season as they had one of the top offenses and defenses in the league.

And with the type of busy offseason they’ve had so far–there’s every reason in the world to believe this team has what it takes to be strong contenders once again.

The addition of Ed Reed will certainly be a major upgrade for the defense as he’s provided great leadership and experience throughout his career. Reed knows what it takes to get his team to the Super Bowl and with the type of talent Houston displayed last year–the defense could certainly be near the top of the league once again in 2013.

On top of the defense, Schaub certainly has plenty of reliable weapons on offense in Arian Foster and Andre Johnson to give this team one of the best next season. Houston has made plenty of progress with playoff wins in each of the last two seasons and it should be interesting to see if they can get over the next hump in 2013.

There's something to be said for pulling out all the stops and using every trick play in the book to win a playoff game, but bringing in J.J. Watt to play quarterback in the wildcat formation was probably a giveaway that he would be running the ball.
