Arguably the best player on the Dallas Cowboys roster has issued a challenge.
On Thursday, defensive end DeMarcus Ware said that, “it’s put up or shut up” time for quarterback Tony Romo after he was asked if Romo was deserving of his contract extension.
“I feel like everybody is deserving to whatever is given to him, but at the end of the day, to me it’s put up or shut up,” Ware said. “I’m just being straight-up honest with you. Get out there and be productive, and that’s with any player.”
To a certain extent I agree with Ware. It is time for Romo to put up or shut up, but I don’t agree with the manner in which the message was delivered. Ware isn’t a loudmouth; he’s not known to stir the pot, a la Brandon Jacobs’ style.
So, why do it now? Couldn’t have Ware pulled Romo aside and let him know what he was thinking, instead of putting it out there for the media to have a field day with it?
“Whatever they get, they’re deserving of it,” Ware said. “You just got to get out there and play, and I know he can be and will be the quarterback that is going to be the quarterback that is going to take us to the next level.”
Romo’s almost inevitable debacles late in games of importance will haunt him until the day he wins a championship. Fair or not, the challenge has been issued, how or if Romo answers it, is yet to be determined.
