I have no doubt in my mind that the Cleveland Browns will be selecting a corner back in this year’s NFL Draft. The Draft is full of defensive back talent through all rounds. Who that corner is— remains up for debate.
There is the possibility of Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back, Dee Milliner will not be there when the Browns go on the clock. If that happens, it will be of the most importance to stay calm. Cleveland must cut a deal with another team to trade out of the sixth pick. A team with two second round picks, like the Miami Dolphins could be a possibility.
The question that the Browns will have to contemplate is if no one wants the sixth pick, is Florida State Seminoles defensive back, Xavier Rhodes the next best choice? I do like Rhodes a lot and he does have a ton of upside. Is he worthy of the sixth overall pick though? Or, if a trade is made with some other team, is Rhodes available at that spot? What’s so great about Rhodes anyways?
With a large frame (6’1″ and 210 lbs), Rhodes brings physicality to the table much like Joe Haden. Rhodes is an “in your face, I’m going to hit you right off the line” type of player. The Florida native is a jammer that is better in man coverage. Zones can get Rhodes extremely frustrated and he can be caught with frozen hips.
Rhodes is truly a natural athletic specimen. At Miami Norland High School, Rhodes was a wide receiver and defensive back. After being recruited and choosing FSU, Rhodes did not disappoint. In 2010, Rhodes earned the ACC’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. That year he registered 54 tackles, 12 pass break ups and four interceptions. Last season, Rhodes added three more interceptions to his career total and had seven more pass break ups. He finished his college career with eight interceptions and 23 pass break ups.
Corner back is a pressing need for the Browns. In 2012, the brown-and-orange lost every game they played when their best corner (Haden) did not play. It would be completely insane not to see a shutdown corner back taken in this draft for the Browns. Keep an eye on Rhodes.
