The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a very nice position heading into the 2013 NFL season. San Francisco is coming off a Super Bowl appearance, has their franchise quarterback in place with Colin Kaepernick and has added to an already-talented defense with the signing of Nnamdi Asomugha.
Asomugha would probably be best-served playing as a nickel back to start with, but obviously has the potential to be much more for the 49ers. Jim Harbaugh should be able to sit back and relax knowing that the cupboard is full. The upcoming NFL Draft, however, gives the 49ers a chance to add even more pieces.
San Francisco has the 31st and 34th picks, and a total of 13 picks overall. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the 49ers bundle those two picks to move up in the first round to get an impact player.
It is a scary thought to think that the 49ers could get even better, especially if they can get another defensive end or can pick up a starting safety. The offense appears in great shape with Kaepernick, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis so adding to the defense might be the priority.
I’m sure Harbaugh has a plan in place to either use the 13 picks to build up depth or package picks together to move up and add an impact player. There is no doubt that the 49ers are the team to beat right now in the NFC even with the moves made by the Seattle Seahawks in their own division. The draft will allow San Francisco to just get even better than they already are. It may even allow Harbaugh to be able to calm down even just a little.
