New Orleans Saints Rumors: Team To Re-sign Sedrick Ellis?
The New Orleans Saints defense is starting to come together during this offseason as the organization is starting to put together the final pieces. One piece that is unclear is defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. Ellis has not really produced for the Saints since being the seventh overall pick of the 2008 NFL draft.
There was speculation earlier in the offseason that the Saints might not re-sign Ellis, and that could turn out to be true. However, there has recently been speculation that the Saints might in fact be interested in re-signing Ellis. Ellis has reportedly been in talks with the Saints about a new contract, but there is still no word on whether the team will re-sign him or not.
Ellis was seen as a top pass rusher coming out of USC back in 2008, but has only made 12.5 sacks in his five seasons with the Saints. I actually thought it would be a good idea if the Saints let him go, and I still feel that way. However, it seems like the Saints might want to give him one more chance to prove himself.
Ellis has played nose tackle before and with the Saints going to a 3-4 defense they could use him there. However, Ellis would really have to prove himself because the Saints currently have Brodrick Bunkley and Akiem Hicks slated to play nose tackle with their new defense. It would be difficult for Ellis to crack the depth chart unless he had a phenomenal offseason and training camp.
If the Saints do decide to bring him back, it will likely be for the minimum and he would likely just be a depth player. I think the Saints should just cut their losses and not even bother re-signing Ellis because he has been given plenty of chances to prove himself, but has not lived up to the hype. Nonetheless, only time will tell if the Saints re-sign Ellis. Either way, it will be a make or break season for Ellis no matter where he ends up.
