San Francisco 49ers Would Regret Not Extending Mike Iupati
When the San Francisco 49ers drafted right tackle Anthony Davis and left guard Mike Iupati in 2010, they may have had little idea that the two of them would be a part of the best offensive line in the NFL. Davis got his $37.3 million extension, and the 49ers would be remiss if they didn’t reward his line-mate, Iupati.
According to Albert Breer of NFL.com, the 49ers have entered into discussions with Iupati about an extension, although no deal is imminent and no timetable has been set.
Iupati, who was named first-team All-Pro in 2012, was a huge reason the 49ers were able to run the ball at a clip of 155.7 yards per game, good for fourth in the NFL. Obviously this is an element to the 49ers game that they don’t want or need to sacrifice, so the chances of Iupati getting paid what he desires stand pretty high.
Hashing out a deal for a top offensive lineman may take some time, however, especially when you compare the price tags of the highest paid guards in the league–Carl Nicks ($9.5 million per season) and Logan Mankins ($8.5 million per season).
Iupati would probably even see more money Davis was given in a long-term extension. He is a key in utilizing the plays of offensive coordinator Greg Roman and head coach Jim Harbaugh, mixing the downfield pass and the read-option with quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick and LBwon’t be in the discussion for contract extensions until after next season, which is why it would be imperative for the Niners to lock up Iupati now.
