Detroit Lions Rumors: Matthew Stafford College Roommate Fighting for Roster Spot

Tim Fuller-USA Today Sports

On Monday, the Detroit Lions announced the re-signing of several 2012 players. Among them was the former college roommate of Matthew Stafford at the University of Georgia, Kris Durham. Like several other wide receivers, he will be fighting for a spot to play in games and catch passes from Stafford.

Durham will be competing alongside Brian Robiskie and Mike Thomas for a spot at the number four or five wide receiver. The trio will also see competition from a potential 2013 NFL Draft pick the Lions make. The Lions have their top three wide receivers in Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles. Both Burleson and Broyles suffered injuries last year, which actually led to Durham being called up from the practice squad.

In the 2012 season, Durham caught 8 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. This came in only four games for the Lions. In a Sunday Night Football game against the Green Bay Packers, Durham caught four passes for 54 yards and was targeted nine times by Stafford. The familiarity of Stafford and Durham seemed present and could lead to a great duo down the road.

Durham did not get a lot of time to showcase his skills. In several games, he also dropped very catchable balls. Durham did college seven first downs on his eight catches, including a one handed highlight reel catch against the Packers.

While at Georgia, Durham saw receiving yard totals of 82, 169, and 199 from quarterback Stafford. After sitting out the 2009 season, Durham put up more impressive numbers in his official senior year. In 2010, Durham collected 32 passes for 659 yards and three touchdowns.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Durham in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Durham has the potential to be an every down NFL wide receiver in my opinion. At 6’6”, Durham needs to use his size to win more catchable balls. The duo could prove to be a huge secret weapon in the 2013 NFL season if Durham makes the cut.
