Houston Texans 2013 Game Predictions

Troy Taormina - USA Today Sports

The Houston Texans enter the 2013 season with the weight of the city of Houston on their shoulders. With the talent they have in QB Matt Schaub, RB Arian Foster and WR Andre Johnson, they have the starpower to overcome physical defenses. Not to mention that they have a physical defense themselves, with LB Brian Cushing returning to the lineup after a season ending ACL tear. DE J.J. Watt is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and they added S Ed Reed to their secondary. There are question marks regarding the Houston Texans mental toughness. When the games count the most, the Texans seem to shrivel under the pressure. For some reason, they can’t get past the AFC Divisional Round. The biggest questions is Matt Schaub and whether or not he can get over the hump.

They have cupcake games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders. Although the Kansas City Chiefs had the worst record in the league last season, they picked up some really good players in free agency, adding to a team that had six players in the Pro Bowl last season. They also have tough games against the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Baltimore Ravens, the San Francisco 49ers, the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. Sleeper teams that aren’t better than the Texans but could cause them problems are teams like the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos. With all that being said, you can’t count out the Houston Texans. They have the talent and coaching to get a top see in the AFC and I believe they will do that this upcoming season.

Week 1: Houston Texans at San Diego Chargers

texans vs chargers
Thomas Campbell - USA Today Sports

The Houston Texans open their season on a Monday night doubleheader against the weird San Diego Chargers. QB Phillip Rivers has been struggling with turnovers these past few seasons, leading NFL experts to believe he isn’t so elite after all. However, I predict that Rivers will perform rather well, only committing one interception. I predict Schaub will perform okay, not great and Arian Foster will carry this load. Rivers will have a chance to tie the game at then end, only to get sacked on 4th down. Houston Texans – 28 San Diego Chargers – 20

Week 2: Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans

Jim Brown - USA Today Sports

Although the Tennessee Titans made a mini splash in free agency with the signing of TE Delanie Walker from the San Francisco 49ers and RB Shonne Greene from the New York Jets, the Titans secondary is horrible and I still question their quarterback play. Running Back Chris Johnson is still in a Titans uniform, but they don’t have a solid offensive line to help create running lanes for him. I expect Schaub to have a field day. Houston Texans – 30 Tennessee Titans - 14

Week 3: Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens

texans vs ravens
Thomas Campbell - USA Today Sports

Safety Ed Reed returns to Baltimore in Week 3 and I predict he will cause problems for QB Joe Flacco. The Ravens lost key players, like WR Anquan Boldin to the San Francisco 49ers and I believe it will be easier for the defense to zone in on WR Torrey Smith. This game will be physical, but I think Houston Texans are little better right now than the Baltimore Ravens. I predict Joe Flacco will have a costly turnover and the Houston Texans squeak by the Ravens with a win. Houston Texans – 28 Baltimore Ravens – 27

Week 4: Houston Texans vs Seattle Seahawks

David Butler II - USA Today Sports

After a hard-fought victory the week before against the Ravens, the Texans face another physical defense in the Seattle Seahawks. Good thing they aren’t playing at CenturyLink Field because I would give the Texans no shot. I’ve seen the best of teams succumb to what is known as the ‘6th Man’. Thankfully, the game is at Reliant Stadium and I give the Houston Texans a lil bit more of a chance, but not much. I think this will be a classic Matt Schaub shrinking game and the Texans will have no answer for Russell Wilson. Houston Texans – 14 Seattle Seahawks – 28

Week 5: Houston Texans at San Francisco 49ers

texans vs 49ers
Brett Davis - USA Today Sports

This is the third week in a row that the Houston Texans face a physical defense, which in Week 5 is against the San Francisco 49ers. Matt Schaub will play well, but I believe this game will come down to the defensive play. Again, it will be physical but I believe the Texans defense will get tired towards the end of the game and the 49ers will carry out the victory. Houston Texans – 21 San Francisco 49ers – 30

Week 6: Houston Texans vs St. Louis Rams

texans vs rams
Troy Taormina - USA Today Sports

This game will come as sort of a break for the Houston Texans. I predict the Houston Texans will take out their anger from last week’s loss on the poor St. Louis Rams. J.J Watt will have a huge game, accumulating 5 sacks and one forced fumble against QB Sam Bradford. Texans will win big. Houston Texans – 42 St. Louis Rams – 17

Week 7: Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs

texans vs chiefs
David Butler II - USA Today Sports

Even with QB Alex Smith and RB Jamaal Charles in the Kansas City Chiefs starting lineup, I predict that the Houston Texans will win big. Again, I predict J.J. Watt will have a field day against the “very offensive” offensive line for the Chiefs. Alex Smith will spend his day on his back mostly and Arian Foster will run all over the Chiefs defense. Houston Texans – 35 Kansas City Chiefs – 17

Week 8: Houston Texans Bye Week

texans bye week
David Butler II - USA Today Sports

Week 8 serves as the Houston Texans bye week and I believe it came at the perfect time. After taking on three teams with explosive offenses and physical defenses, the Texans are probably beat up and crawling into the bye week. This gives them a little time to prepare for the Indianapolis Colts coming into town in Week 9 and you can’t count out QB Andrew Luck.

Week 9: Houston Texans vs Indianapolis Colts

texans vs colts
Brian Spurlock - USA Today Sports

Quarterback Andrew Luck and the crew stroll into Reliant Stadium to take on a foe they know pretty well. I predict this game will be a shootout, with Matt Schaub throwing for three TDs, while Andrew Luck will throw for two TDs and run one in. The Indianapolis Colts will be aggressive and try to go for the win instead of the tie and the Texans will stop the Colts at the goal line on 4th down. The Texans will come out with the victory. Houston Texans – 34 Indianapolis Colts – 31

Week 10: Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals

texans vs cardinals
Mark L. Baer - USA Today Sports

Matt Schaub will play horrible this game, but will be saved by the Texans defense. The Texans will force four turnovers, leading to 21 points. Arian Foster will have a big game, over 100 yards and one touchdown. The Arizona Cardinals will shoot themselves in the foot this game, and the Texans leave Arizona with a victory Houston Texans – 28 Arizona Cardinals – 10

Week 11: Houston Texans vs Oakland Raiders

texans vs raiders
Troy Taormina - USA Today Sports

The Oakland Raiders haven’t been relevant since the infamous Tuck Rule and they won’t be relevant in this game. Matt Schaub will redeem himself and Andre Johnson will have two TDs with over 100 yards in this game. Texans defense stifles RB Darren McFadden in the first half and he disappears in the second half. Texans wins big. Houston Texans – 24 Oakland Raiders – 10

Week 12: Houston Texans vs Jacksonville Jaguars

texans vs jaguars
Brett Davis - USA Today Sports

Thanks to a huge game by Andre Johnson and a late TD by him, the Texans squeak by in overtime against the Jacksonville Jaguars. I haven’t forgotten, but I know Texans fans wish not to remember. The Texans fans will still have amnesia as the Texans will completely dominate the Jaguars from start to finish. Matt Schaub will have his best game of the season, totaling five TDs and over 400 yards. QB Blaine Gabbert will be horrible and RB Maurice Jones-Drew will have a bad game. Houston Texans – 42 Jacksonville Jaguars – 17

Week 13: Houston Texans vs New England Patriots

texans vs patriots
Greg M. Cooper - USA Today Sports

Oh boy, big bad Tom Brady and the New England Patriots make a stop in Houston and are looking to bully the Texans this game. Every media outlet in the United States will talk about how well Matt Schaub has been playing in the past few games and how we all expect the Texans to finally stand up to the Big, Bad Patriots and send them packing to Foxborough, MA with a loss. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Texans will again come up short against the Patriots. The Texans defense will allow Tom Brady to stand tall in the pocket and he will carve the Texans defense to pieces. Matt Schaub will throw for three TDs. The Texans will hang in the game until Arian Foster has a costly turnover that will lead to a Patriots touchdown. The Texans will stand up to the bully but not come out with the victory. Houston Texans – 24 New England Patriots – 35

Week 14: Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars

texans vs jaguars
Brett Davis - USA Today Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars will play no different in Reliant Stadium than they did in EverBank Field. Running Back Maurice Jones-Drew will have a much better game, but it will not be enough. Matt Schaub will play okay but Arian Foster will again carry this team to a victory. Houston Texans – 35 Jacksonville Jaguars – 17

16 of 19

Week 15: Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts

texans vs colts
Brian Spurlock - USA Today Sports

This will be a classic sluggish game by the Houston Texans. The Texans will stroll into Indianapolis thinking they already won the game and QB Andrew Luck will humble them. Luck will have no interceptions and throw for four touchdowns. The Texans offense will never get into a good rhythm and the defense will not be able to stop the Colts in Lucas Oil Stadium. Houston Texans – 20 Indianapolis Colts – 30

17 of 19

Week 16: Houston Texans vs Denver Broncos

texans vs broncos
Chris Humphreys - USA Today Sports

Peyton Manning will supremely outplay Matt Schaub, accumulating four touchdowns and over 400 yards. Arian Foster will have the best game of the season, with two touchdowns and over 150 yards, but it will not be enough to overcome Matt Schaub’s average play. This will be a karma game for the Broncos who almost beat the Texans at Sports Authority Field at Mile High last season. Texans lose again. Houston Texans – 24 Denver Broncos – 31

18 of 19

Week 17: Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans

texans vs titans
Troy Taormina - USA Today Sports

Week 17 is a cupcake game for the Houston Texans. Both the offense and the defense have tremendous game against the Titans. Andre Johnson and Arian Foster will both have big games respectfully. J.J. Watt will again have a great sacking and ball-batting day in Tennessee and it will give them a great boost going into the postseason. Houston Texans – 35 Tennessee Titans - 10

Houston Texans 2013 Game Predictions

Robert Deutsch - USA Today Sports

After Week 17, I predict the Houston Texans will finish the regular season with a 11-5 record. Matt Schaub will have some up and down games that I hope he will turn around in the postseason. Look at Joe Flacco and what he was able to do last season after horrible games against the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos. Flacco caught fire in the postseason and didn’t look back. I believe that the Houston Texans can catapult themselves the same way the Baltimore Ravens did the season before and be a very serious contender in the postseason.
