Breaking Down Before The Draft: New York Giants Receivers

Jim O’Connor — US Presswire

Let’s continue our look at the New York Giants before Thursday’s draft with a look at the receivers. I’m combining the wide outs and the tight ends — the guys who will be catching passes from Eli Manning all season long.

Midnight came and went today and no one made an offer to Victor Cruz. That means he’ll back with the Giants this year. Whether or not he is in the future is up to him and Jerry Reese now (and Jay-Z). Hakeem Nicks is back too and the Giants need him to be fully healthy in order to get back to making the playoffs. They really missed his presence on the outside last year. Gone are Ramses Barden and Dominik Hixon. That means Reuben Randle steps in and becomes the third wide receiver. Louis Murphy was brought in as a speedster on the outside on a one year deal. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him catch a few deep balls for touchdowns this year.

The revolving door at tight end continues for the Giants. Out goes Martellus Bennett. In comes free agent import Brandon Myers who had a breakout season last year. Bear Pascoe returns as a tight end/h-back. Watch out for last year’s draft pick Adrien Robinson at tight end. He was called a JPP like athlete by Reese when he drafted him. Look for him to be more involved with a year under his belt.

The Giants will need all these guys to make some sort of impact all year. Could the add to it in the draft? Perhaps. Tyler Eifert could be the target with the first round pick. They could look to add another wide out in the later rounds for depth. They have other holes that need to sure up and receiver isn’t really one of them.
