2013 NFL Draft: What is Plan B for New Orleans Saints?

Derick Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2013 NFL Draft just days away, teams everywhere are making their final preparations and plans. This close to draft day, you have to believe most teams have their list of targets narrowed down to a select few. When it comes to the New Orleans Saints, one player most everyone agrees is on their list, is defensive end Barkevious Mingo.

It’s a natural fit for both parties, with Mingo hailing from Louisiana and playing his college ball at LSU, and with the Saints in desperate need of pass-rushers. Most analysts agree that the talented DE will go somewhere in the middle of the first round, and the Saints sit nearly smack dab in the middle at No. 15.

But what if Mingo is already off the board by then? It’s very possible, as many also think he could land with the New York Jets at No.9.

I think the pick has to be a defensive player, no matter what. The Saints had the league’s worst defense a year ago, and it’s just in too bad of a state, for the offense to carry the team every week.

Other popular names the team could target include – OLB Jarvis Jones and DT Star Lotulelei. I don’t think the Saints can go wrong with either one of those guys, as both should be able to come in right away and contribute.

No matter who New Orleans ultimately selects, fans can be assured that the draftee will get supreme tutelage from new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. He’s a DC with a proven system, and you know the team won’t take anyone that doesn’t fit in. Ideally, the team takes Mingo at No.15, but if they’re forced to go to plan B, fans should still be confident the franchise will come through with some help for the defense.
