As the clock ticked down on the Oakland Raiders, it became clear that a trade agreement had been reached. And when it was announced that the Miami Dolphins were on the clock, I doubt there was one person who was truly caught by surprise. The Dolphins came into the 2013 NFL Draft with 11 draft picks in their stash and had been rumored to be interested in trading up to grab a left tackle for the last several weeks.

No one was surprised as the Dolphins’ newly acquired selection was locked in and as Commissioner Roger Goodell stepped out on to the stage, fans everywhere mouthed the words “With the third pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select….” and this is where everything went haywire.

Instead of hearing the name Lane Johnson, left tackle out of Oklahoma, Goodell spoke the name Dion Jordan to the awestruck group at the New York Radio City Music Hall.

No one expected this move by the Dolphins. As the Commissioner was walking to the podium, the NFLNetwork’s Draft Guru, Mike Mayock was busy expounding upon the talents of Johnson and how he would be Ryan Tannehill’s best friend for the next decade or so.

That is how far out of left field this pick was.

As the words sunk in to the rest of the world, the brilliance of general manager became absolutely clear. The Dolphins, who see the New England Patriots and Tom Brady as the obstacle standing between them and the AFC East division title, now have two elite edge pass rushers on a defense that just continues to look absolutely monstrous.

Dion Jordan is 6-6, 248 lbs, and he runs the 40-yard dash in an blazing 4.60 seconds. Having him come off of one side, while Cameron Wake, the highest ranked 4-3 defensive end in the NFL (Pro Football Focus), comes tearing through the opposite side, is simply ingenious.

The Dolphins gave up their first round pick (#12)  and the first of their two second round picks (#42) to the Raiders for the chance to grab Jordan, but they still have plenty of picks to work with.  Do not be surprised if you hear the Dolphins’ name being called once again at some point during tonight’s action.

Selecting Jordan was as big of a shock as there could have been tonight, and if nothing else the Dolphins deserve the award for best smoke screen of the draft thus far. Stay tuned as this night is just getting started.
