The St. Louis Rams knew they were going to take Tavon Austin in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but they didn’t wait long to do it. The Rams originally had the No. 16 overall pick, but something must have tipped them off, so they traded up with the Buffalo Bills to No. 8 overall and took Austin just to make sure no one swiped him out from under them.
The Rams have been trying desperately to add a playmaker for quarterback Sam Bradford ever since they landed him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2010. Brandon Lloyd didn’t work and now Danny Amendola is gone, but Austin is a Percy Harvin-like playmaker who can run the ball, catch it and even return kicks. As Jon Gruden says, Austin is an offensive coordinator’s dream come true and now Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has something with which to work in building a contender in St. Louis.
