2013 NFL Draft: Would the Kansas City Chiefs Be Better Off With Eric Fisher at No. 1?

(Denny Medley/USA Today Sports)

With the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, all signs originally pointed to the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Luke Joeckel considering the type of career he had at Texas A&M. While offensive line may be the best approach to take with the top pick, it’s difficult not to wonder if the Chiefs should go with Eric Fisher instead.

Even though he went to a smaller school at Central Michigan, Fisher has been praised by scouts over the last couple of months and the argument can be made that he’s a stronger lineman than Joeckel–which is why it wouldn’t be a surprise if he ended up being the top pick. It’s rare to see an offensive lineman go No. 1 in the draft, but this year’s class features two solid players that could easily end up in Kansas City for the 2013 season.

When looking at the different players the Chiefs can acquire in this year’s draft, but there’s no question they need to focus on the offensive line–especially after acquiring Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers. Now that they have Smith on board, Kansas City’s main job in the draft should be focusing on protecting him as they don’t necessarily need to draft a quarterback just yet.

All signs pointed to Joeckel being selected with the top pick, but with the way things have looked as of lately–it wouldn’t be a surprise if they ended up going with Fisher instead.
