2013 NFL Draft: Seattle Seahawks Select DT Jordan Hill

Jordan Hill, Seattle Seahawks

Arguably the biggest need coming into the draft for the Seattle Seahawks was at defensive tackle. The Seahawks helped themselves in this area by selecting Jordan Hill from Penn State.

Like any draft pick, Hill is far from a sure thing. However, if you’re a Seahawks fan, adding a quality prospect at a position of need is welcomed with open arms.

Currently the Seahawks have Brandon Mebane at nose tackle. Mebane is one of the most underrated dirty work players in the NFL that the average fan doesn’t know about.

At the three-technique position on the interior next to Mebane could be free agent additions Michael Bennett and Tony McDaniel. While Bennett played left defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, he is most likely going to see time on the interior in obvious passing situations. Bennett is far from a long-term answer for the Seahawks though, as he is only signed through the 2013 season. In addition, Bennett has a tear in his rotator cuff and is far from a sure thing to remain healthy for the entire season.

McDaniel is the front-runner to see time on running downs. Like Bennett, McDaniel only signed a one-year contract. This means that the Seahawks are most likely planning to develop a player like Hill in his rookie year and then expect contributions from him in 2014.

Mike Mayock on the NFL Network said that he envisions Hill as a solid member in a rotation at defensive tackle for the Seahawks. Whether it is in 2013 or 2014, if it happens, it will have been a pick well spent.
