Dallas Cowboys Shouldn’t Try to Mimic New England Patriots’ Two-Tight End Offense

The Dallas Cowboys apparently weren’t satisfied with changing their defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3, Tampa 2 this year and Jerry Jones has evidently been talking to Robert Kraft again. Dallas used a lot of two-tight end sets last year, but now the Cowboys are not hiding the fact they’re trying to mimic what the New England Patriots do on offense, which is why they took Gavin Escobar in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Put simply, Jones is becoming more impatient than ever.

After drafting Escobar, Jones blatantly said the Cowboys will be employing the same offense as the Patriots in 2013, which not only includes, but features two tight ends. Of course, it works well for the Patriots because they have two superstar tight ends in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, but New England hasn’t been able to get over the hump since drafting these two players together and revamping its offense around them.

Jones obviously hasn’t noticed this or the fact his team has an incredible track record when running back DeMarco Murray is healthy and utilized correctly. So basically the Cowboys’ already pass-happy offense is about to transform into the equivalent of an Arena Football team.

However, Dallas doesn’t exactly have a stellar offensive line to protect quarterback Tony Romo during the 700 drop backs he’ll likely take this year and the Cowboys definitely didn’t address that in the draft this year because they were too busy adding more “weapons” on offense. But apparently there will be enough footballs to go around for Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Cole Beasley, Dwayne Harris, Tarrence Williams, Jason Witten, James Hanna and Escobar, at least in Jones’ mind.

The kicker is the fact Jones thinks he can duplicate the Patriots’ success with his current squad. Sure, it works for New England and Dallas has a solid group of pass-catching tight ends that’s probably capable of producing at that level, but Tom Brady isn’t under nearly as much pressure from the pass rush as Romo is on a regular basis. It’s little overlooked things like this that keep the Cowboys from being successful with Jones at the helm.
