At the 2013 NFL Draft, Ziggy Ansah caused quite a buzz with his 3D glasses. The glasses, which featured no lenses, were one of the most talked about fashion accessories at the draft, and even were trending on Twitter at one point in the night. Ansah also received notice from one of the largest 3D companies in the world.

IMAX Corporation, owner of 600 giant sized theaters around the world, is offering Ansah free movies for a year. This turns out to be quite the gift for the Detroit Lions’ draft pick, as he wore the glasses in a dare. Ansah told reporters that his friends from BYU dared him to wear the glasses at the event, where he got to shake NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s hand.

Imax had the following to say in their letter:

  • “Congratulations on being chosen as a first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and the highest draft pick from BYU since 1982.”

In the letter, Imax lists several things about their business and names “Star Trek: Into the Darkness” and “Man of Steel” as two movies Ansah will be able to see on the oversized screens. This is where this deal makes sense for Imax. The movie theater company gains some free publicity and also has the opportunity to remind sports fans that two of the summer’s biggest blockbuster movies will be on their screens.

To me the deal is reminiscent of the Super Bowl offer from Red Robin for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Once the restaurant chain found out Kaepernick was a fan, they offered him free food for life with a Super Bowl win.

Imax in a similar move, saw a chance to capitalize on the 3D glasses worn by Ansah. In this case, Ansah doesn’t have to win anything, he just had to be drafted and accept the deal.

I have been outspoken about the Lions taking such a high risk on a player with little football experience. However, as a shareholder in Imax, I love this deal and the chance for more free publicity over time for the movie chain.
