Baltimore Ravens Shouldn’t Cut LB Rolando McClain, Yet

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It hasn’t been a great start to the Rolando McClain-Baltimore Ravens relationship. After inking the troubled linebacker to a one-year deal a few weeks back, McClain showed his gratitude by getting arrested on disorderly conducts charges. Not a great way to start your ‘second chance.’ Now, his future in Baltimore has become uncertain. Will the Ravens just call it good, and let him loose?

They’re reportedly in the process of making that decision, and there’s a very good chance that his days as a Raven will be over before they start. But is that really the correct decision? I don’t think so.

McClain has absolutely zero risk associated with him. While that may sound crazy, the Ravens gave this guy no guaranteed money on a one-year, $750k agreement. So what do they really have to lose? McClain is clearly immature and has already blown his ‘second chance,’ but what did they really expect? I think it would be wise to wait and see what he looks like on the football field, before making a decision on whether or not to cut him.

Baltimore can cut McClain at any time, and it won’t make a difference. The cap won’t be impacted if they do it now or later, so they should at least get a glimpse at what McClain the football player is like. So far, he’s just been a huge bust and a trouble-maker. Odds are, those trends will continue, but why not see what he brings to the table in offseason workouts and training camp?
