Author and essayist Chuck Klosterman wrote a pretty fascinating article about the Cleveland Browns. From the article, we really get a great insight into what happens behind the scenes of the NFL Draft. Teams are constantly in contact with each other and there are a lot of deals that nearly go down or are just missed out on because of timing. This one in particular, however, was because the draft went exactly the way the Browns were hoping.

According to Klosterman, the Browns had a deal set and in place for the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft with the St. Louis Rams who were looking to trade up to secure Tavon Austin whom they got with the eighth pick of the draft, trading with the Buffalo Bills. The Browns had discussed a deal whereby they would get the Rams first round pick as well as their second round and seventh round picks in exchange for the Browns number six overall pick. The only way that this deal would not pass was if everything would go well for the Browns and Louisiana State linebacker Barkevious “KeKe” Mingo would still be available to them, and that’s just how it went.

Mingo, a tall, lean yet extremely effective pass rusher is responsible for 121 total tackles, 15 sacks and 11 passes defended over his illustrious three year term at LSU. Despite being behind in the depth chart in 2011, he still managed eight sacks and 15 tackles for loss. And that’s just a taster, I’m sure, of what’s to come in the young linebacker’s future. Mingo is unafraid of throwing himself into any tackle, despite his relatively light build. That something that will help him as he progresses through the Browns ranks, and it’s what solidified his draft status as one of the top rookie prospects. His 4.58 40-yard dash time, incredible 37 inch vertical leap, and his 128.0 inch broad jump at this year’s NFL Combine didn’t hurt either.
