The Atlanta Falcons have all the talent right now to finally win their first Super Bowl. With one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL and a talented young defense, you got to think the Falcons are one of the favorites to take home the Lombardi trophy.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff has put all the right pieces together for a Falcons championship run, with Matt Ryan at the helm of the offense. There’s only one problem, what happens if Ryan goes down?

There are two men vying to fill Ryan’s shoes should he go down to injury this year, last years undrafted free agent Dominique Davis and 2013 seventh round draft pick, Sean Renfree. Can either of these unproven quarterbacks come in and help the Falcons reach the promise land should Ryan fall to injury?

Davis has the leg-up in the competition for backup quarterback going into mini-camp this year. The super-athletic Davis would bring a different dynamic to the Falcons offense if he were to get his number called this year. With his speed and jumping ability, Davis is built more like Julio Jones than Ryan. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter better have designed a read-option style offense around Davis just in case he is called into action.

During his collegiate career at East Carolina, Davis put up huge passing numbers, but he showed some inconsistency in making all the throws. However, Davis showed so much talent last year that the Falcons brass felt comfortable enough to keep him as the number two quarterback.

Sean Renfree

In the seventh round this year, the Falcons selected Duke field-general Sean Renfree. During his collegiate career, Renfree showed a top notch arm, but he made too many mistakes, which made him fall to the end of the draft. Renfree is more of a proto-typical quarterback that would be able to air-it-out to the Falcons’ dangerous receivers.

The Falcons must hope that Davis and Renfree continue to show improvement during mini-camp and training camp. One of them will have to step up and lead the Falcons to the promised-land if Ryan were to go down.
