Terrell Davis Comparisons for Montee Ball Mean Bad News for Other Denver Broncos RBs
The Broncos have made it clear they believe they found a “gem” and Ball could have a similar impact to that of Terrell Davis when vice president of football operations John Elway was the Broncos’ quarterback in the mid 1990s.
“When we were watching Montee, the one thing that stood out about his running style is that it’s a lot like Terrell Davis, and so that got us very excited, and we hope that Montee has an even longer career than Terrell had,” Elway told ESPN.
If Ball does become the workhorse in Denver then Peyton Manning may end his career the way Elway did in 1997 and 1998 when he and Davis won back-to-back Super Bowls. Davis continued playing but endured a serious knee injury in 1999 that eventually led to his retirement in 2001.
It seems that the Broncos are really excited about Ball joining the team and they expect that he may contribute as early as this year and they plan on him being the franchise back in the near future. Although this is great news for a team who only has one true every down back who is aging, it will not be good news for Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno because they are both in their last year of their contract and I cannot imagine a scenario where the Broncos keep both of them.
I think it will depend a lot on how McGahee come backs from an injury that caused him to miss seven games to end his 2012 season. If he shows he has three or four more years left in the tank then he may be kept if willing to play at a reasonable salary. If he doesn’t then the Broncos may sign the 25-year-old Moreno to a three- or four-year deal at around $1 million per year.
