Football season is getting closer and closer. Sure it’s May, but in May rookie and free agent mini-camps begin as the first signs of the upcoming season are upon us. For the New York Giants that time is this weekend, as this camp is a combination of draft picks, undrafted players and free agents.
There are some names that Giants fans should be familiar with. First of all, are this year’s rookie class. Its the first time Justin Pugh gets to step on the field as a Giant. It’s the first time Ryan Nassib will be under center in a Big Blue uniform. The Giants will need some of the members of the rookie class to step up and provide important depth.
The second part of this is the free-agents. On the offensive side, Johnny White has some experience in the league as a running back. The Giants are looking for some additional depth at the position, so if White impresses he could find himself in camp. On the defensive side of the ball, George Selvie will be trying out a defensive end. Selvie was college teammates with Jason Pierre-Paul and was known in college for his own pass rushing ability.
Lastly, you have the undrafted free agents. Among them are five linebackers. The Giants are looking for help at the position, as it is probably the weakest on the roster. One or more of these guys could find themselves with an invite this summer.
Rookie mini-camps may not mean a lot to fans, but it does to the players and the organization. The Giants hope they can find another Victor Cruz this weekend.
