New York Jets: David Garrard Calls it a Career, Announces Retirement
You can scratch David Garrard from the New York Jets quarterback competition after Garrard has decided to call it quits due to lingering knee problems. It was first reported by Ian Rapoport that Garrard had informed a couple of teammates that he was done with the Jets.
When he signed it was widely believed that Garrard might be able to win the starting quarterback job and there was still a shot the Jets might go with Garrard even after selecting Geno Smith in the second round. However, the Jets grew smitten with Smith after rookie camp and there have been several rumors coming from Jets camp that the Jets might consider starting Smith. Now, there is one less quarterback for Smith to leapfrog.
Garrard had arthroscopic surgery on his knee last year after signing with the Miami Dolphins in March 2012. He underwent surgery in August and was released in September. He has been cleared for football activities since November. However, Garrard texted Adam Schein saying his knee was swelling up after practices.
Garrard was once a promising quarterback with the Jacksonville Jaguars but injuries, especially to his knee, have derailed that and now it looks like it has caused the 35-year-old to call it a career.
Garrard will finish his NFL career with an 85.8 passer rating, 16,003 passing yards, 89 touchdown passes and 17 rushing touchdowns. He hasn’t stepped foot on a football field in a game situation since 2010, however.
With Garrard no longer in the picture, the quarterback competition boils down to Mark Sanchez, Smith, and Greg McElroy with Matt Simms having an outside shot.
