This Has Not Been A Good Week For John Idzik
New York Jets newly appointed general manager John Idzik was thrown a huge curveball yesterday when David Garrard came out and said that he his calling it “quits” as a result of his recent knee troubles. Idzik signed Garrard early in the off-season in hopes of bringing in not only veteran leadership, but a player who can compete with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job.
Idzik has made some good signings in his short tenure at the helm of the Jets organization, and ones that make sense not only for performance on the field, but financially. Bringing in guys like Dawan Landry, Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson, Antwan Barnes, and Antonio Garay have so far been deemed good decisions by Idzik, but this week has not been one that Idzik was hoping for.
In addition to Garrard’s sudden departure, the Jets and Idzik also lost out on a great offensive playmaker in Josh Cribbs. The team showed serious interest, but they ultimately lost out on his services to the Oakland Raiders who signed him yesterday.
What is unfortunate about these two scenarios is that now Idzik needs to find a solution to both of them, and fast. Idzik and the Jets have preached that they want a bona fide competition at quarterback, but not with the exit of Garrard, it appears that Smith and Sanchez are realistically the only two that will be battling it out for the starting job. In regards to the receiver situation, the Jets will now likely bring in Brandon Lloyd or Ramses Barden for receiving help.
