Paul Posluszny is Heart of Jacksonville Jaguars Defense
Coming off of a 2-14 showing last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars had very few bright spots on either side of the ball. However, middle linebacker, Paul Posluszny, was one of the top players in the league at his position. Posluszny posted 139 tackles last season, along with three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Posluszny was snubbed by Pro-Bowl voters in 2012, and also in 2011 when he recorded 119 tackles for the Jaguars. Posluszny’s snub could have been expected, especially when you consider the Jaguars had the 30th worst defense in terms of total yards given up, during the 2012 NFL season.
Posluszny has exhibited consistency throughout the course of his career, dating back to his tenure with Buffalo Bills. The long-haired “backer” has displayed athleticism, toughness, and intelligence during his time in the league, and should continue to produce at a high level for a number of seasons.
If new head coach Gus Bradley wants to transform the Jaguars and their defense, Posluszny is going to be one the first players he will look to. Bradley will the need the Penn State product to continue to be the leader of the defense, as the Jaguars go through a transitional period in the 2013 season.
Look for Posluszny to excel in Bradley’s physical and distinctive defense. Posluszny’s role will not change a great deal, even though Jacksonville will often be playing a 4-3 under front, along with a few other unique variations from Bradley and his staff. Posluszny will still be expected to make the majority of the calls for the defensive unit, and the team will lean on his experience and instincts to guide them in the upcoming season.
Do not expect to see a miracle turnaround for the Jaguars defensive group, but look for improvement from the dismal production in 2012. If Bradley can come close to replicating what he did with the Seattle Seahawks defense, Jaguar fans could be in for at least a small treat in 2013.
