When it comes to the 2013 NFL Draft, one of the biggest surprises involved the Buffalo Bills using a first-round pick on former Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel. Everybody knew the potential was there for Manuel when it came to being one of the top quarterbacks from this year’s draft class, but nobody could have predicted him to be the first one taken this year.
If anything, the argument can be made that Manuel most likely would have still been available in the second round, but that doesn’t mean he could turn into one of the top rookies from this year’s class. In fact, if you ask Bills first year head coach Doug Marrone how he feels about his new quarterback–he loves what he’s seen so far.
Buffalo certainly made the right move by parting ways with Ryan Fitzpatrick, but whether or not Manuel is the answer for the team at quarterback is a different story. Manuel still has plenty to prove before the Bills will know whether or not this was the right move, but Marrone doesn’t really have much to compare him–which is why it’s ridiculous for the head coach to claim Manuel is ahead of any other previous rookie quarterback he’s been fortunate enough to work with.
The potential is certainly there for Manuel, but let’s wait and see how well he’s performing at the beginning of September before making any assumptions about how far ahead he is compared to other rookies.
