Oakland Raiders: Linebacker Kevin Burnett Could Have Monster Year

The Oakland Raiders are in need of a big-time drive stopper on defense, and that man could potentially be Kevin Burnett.

Burnett is in no way a super-star linebacker, or even a superior pass-rusher, but he is a solid inside linebacker that the Raiders can count on.

Burnett has played in every game he was healthy for in the past three years, so he is a reliable player who can make it through a full football season. With a Raider team that was beat up all last season, they need players they can count on for every game; Burnett is that guy.

Burnett totaled 110 combined tackles, 80 solo tackles and 30 assisted tackles. As a middle linebacker, the least you can do is help stop the run and short dump-off passes. He can be the tackler that the Raiders need, but he has never had a monster season in his whole career.

Can the 2013-2014 season be Burnett’s year?

Assuming Burnett stays healthy, he could easily rack up 100 solo tackles this upcoming season. He can play the same role that Jerod Mayo of the New England Patriots. Like Mayo, Barnett can be a presence in the front-seven that could make consistent tackles and help gang-tackle. The Raiders defense has an interesting look, but they still have a few gaps on the defensive line and in the secondary, so it is key to have a solid line-backing core led by Burnett.

Burnett will have to wrap up well and help slow down offenses so the Raiders to not give up big leads like last year.
