Tampa Bay Buccaneers Training Camp Profile: Mike Glennon
We all love a quarterback battle. Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans might be getting themselves one if they aren’t careful. The Buccaneers drafted quarterback Mike Glennon in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft and many believed it was to be the replacement to inconsistent starting quarterback Josh Freeman.
Many thought that the Buccaneers might draft a quarterback earlier than the third round when comments came out that head coach Greg Schiano was not impressed with the play of Freeman and could even consider trading him. Schiano retracted those statements, but the drafting of Glennon with the 73rd pick brought some of the discussion back to the surface.
But with OTAs in full swing and training camp coming up, is Glennon a real threat to win the starting job? Probably not. But that’s not to say he doesn’t have a real chance to impress. Reports out of OTAs have been mixed, with criticisms being that Glennon has been playing it very conservative and making most of his throws short and intermediate. Having studied Glennon heavily the past two seasons, I can say this is exactly what he should be doing. Glennon’s deep arm has never been in question, and when it comes to his deep throws he doesn’t have anything to prove. But the criticisms of Glennon had to do with his ability to check down, go through his reads, and take something off his throws when he needed to. It sounds like that’s just what he is doing.
Best-case scenario for Glennon this year I suspect is to beat out quarterback Dan Orlovsky for Freeman’s backup spot and work hard. Use his time to acclimate himself to what is almost certainly a more complex offense than he has ever seen. Glennon can also work on his decision-making and learn to play with more discipline. If he can use this training camp, and this season to do that, the 2014 Buccaneers camp could be much more exciting because Glennon has a ton of upside, and could beat out Freeman does not continue to progress.
