Former Baltimore Raven Matt Birk Not A Fan Of Planned Parenthood
The Baltimore Ravens got to enjoy the fruits of their labor this past Wednesday when they visited the White House and President Barack Obama. Certain players like Anquan Boldin missed the festivities due to commitments to his new team. Matt Birk, however, skipped out for an entirely different reason.
When asked why he didn’t go to the White House, Birk said, “I would say that I have great respect for the office of the Presidency, but about five or six weeks ago, our President made a comment in a speech, saying ‘God bless Planned Parenthood.’”
“Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I am Catholic, I am active in the Pro-Life movement and I just felt like I couldn’t deal with that. I couldn’t endorse that in any way. I’m very confused by [Obama's] statement. For God to bless a place where they’re ending 330,000 lives a year? I just chose not to attend.”
I’m not one to spout off my opinion on controversial political matters, so I must….wait a minute, I’m getting paid to spout off my opinions now (Love you Rantsports.com) so that’s what I’m going to do.
I find Matt Birk’s opinion to be really stupid. What, are we living in 1950′s conservative America, Mr. Birk? Still, I can’t knock the guy for being passionate about what he truly believes in, even though I’m an advocate of pro-choice.
Hypothetical situation for me. Let’s say I was a part of a Super Bowl-winning team and I got a chance to visit President Dick Chaney (I said hypothetical). I’m very big on anti animal abuse. Dick Chaney is very big on hunting, both animals and humans (Dick Chaney jokes never get old). Still I would suck it up, go visit him and even shake that clown’s hand.
To share a moment like that with teammates would be totally worth it to me. Matt Birk, I don’t agree with your opinion, but I respect it and I’m grateful that I can live in a country where we’re free to express our opinions.
