Anyone who watched Chad Johnson, a.k.a. Chad Ochocinco, on the football field knew he had a playful side to him. His touchdown celebrations and antics on the field got him fined on numerous occasions but it was always in the name of having fun playing a game. It appears as though Johnson hasn’t learned which are the fun situations, and which are the really serious ones.
While in court today, the former NFL star wide receiver was reprimanded and sentenced to 30 days in jail because he slapped his attorney on the butt when asked by the if he was satisfied with his lawyer, Adam Swickle. Apparently the court room erupted in laughter over the tap on the rear end, except for the most important person in the room, the judge.
After the incident, Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh rejected Johnson’s no-jail plea for violating probation and sentenced him to 30 days in jail. According to ESPN.com, McHugh was angry over the butt-slap heard ’round the world.
“I don’t know that you’re taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?” McHugh said, slapping the plea deal document down on her desk. “The whole courtroom was laughing. I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn’t a joke.”
Upon hearing the judge’s decision Johnson tried to back track saying it wasn’t a joke but his actions spoke louder than words.
“This is your courtroom. I have no intent to make this a joke. It’s not funny,” Johnson told the judge “My life is in a shambles right now and I try my best to laugh and keep a smile on my face.”
While Johnson probably, OK definitely shouldn’t, have slapped his lawyers butt in court, the judge’s decision seems a little harsh. Johnson was just trying to make the best of a bad situation. I’m well aware that he’s to blame for the position he was in but it’s not like he broke the law by hitting his attorney’s backside. By nature Johnson is a fun guy and while he chose the wrong time to fool around, throwing him in jail for an innocent reaction seems pretty irrational.
It seems as though Chad Johnson has finally come face to face with the ultimate consequences of his actions and it isn’t as much fun as he thought it would be.
