5 Dallas Cowboys Veterans Who Deserve To Be Cut
5 Dallas Cowboys Veterans Who Should Be Cut
The Dallas Cowboys have been 8-8 in the past two seasons and have just missed out on the playoffs in both years. Whether Cowboys fans want to admit it or not, their team has been average, which is what their record indicates. While that doesn’t mean there needs to be household changes, tweaks are necessary and the Cowboys should be making those maneuvers for this upcoming season.
There is a need for the Cowboys to get younger in some places on the roster where an infusion of young talent could help the team move forward, and win games in the immediate future. To be able to get their youth onto the field, Dallas will likely have to release veteran players who can still help in the short term but might not be in the Cowboys long-term plans. This list will take you through some of those veterans who should be cut by the Cowboys in order to make playing time for younger, stronger and more athletic players on the roster.
Some of the names won’t look pretty but change is never an easy thing. The Cowboys have been doing a good job of ushering in a new era of Cowboys football ever since Jason Garrett has become the head coach and he’s never shied away from making a tough decision. It’s difficult to imagine some of these players not being a member of the Cowboys in 2013 but in the end it’s probably for the best.
Here are the 5 Dallas Cowboys veterans who deserve to be cut:
5. Ryan Cook
The Cowboys already drafted their center of the future in Travis Frederick and they also re-signed Phil Costa so Cook’s use as a backup center has been washed away. He’s due to make decent money in 2013 and every penny the Cowboys can save would be a help moving forward.
4. Doug Free
Free I know they just restructured his contract but they would be better off allowing Jeremy Parnell to play in his place full-time. He’s a much stronger and more athletic player than Free and his time as a Cowboy should come to an end.
3. Jay Ratliff
Don’t get me wrong, Ratliff looks like an excellent fit in Monte Kiffin’s Tampa 2 defense but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy the past few years and his play has dipped. I know he won’t be facing the double teams he used to but he’s in his thirties, not good for an NFL player. His arrest last year was also a poor call in judgment and he should be made an example of.
2. Lawrence Vickers
The Cowboys likely don’t need a fullback anymore because of their new offense focusing more on utilizing the tight end. Vickers also didn’t do much to help the Cowboys running game last season and he underachieved.
1. Mackenzy Bernadeau
Another player who wasn’t very good for the Cowboys last season. Dallas needs an infusion of youth along their offensive line and Bernadeau should be on the list of players who need to be released to make way for the young linemen on the Cowboys.
