Unknown, but not to the ones in the know…especially the ones in the know for the Atlanta Falcons.
With pick 249 in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Falcons chose the accomplished Duke Blue Devils quarterback Sean Renfree…but what did they get with that pick? A quarterback worthy enough to be Duke’s first draft pick in nine years, for one thing. Being a vital part of the team that made their first bowl appearance since 1995 in the 2012 Belk Bowl is another. The Blue Devils weren’t a household name as far as college football goes, but with Renfree’s efforts and triumphs during his tenure they’re definitely on the map…and gaining ground.
With Matt Ryan firmly ensconced at quarterback and Dominique Davis primed to be his backup, training camp will be more of a learning/gaining-experience type of situation for Renfree. Considering his willingness to learn and work hard to achieve ever-greater heights, look for it to be fruitful for all parties involved.
Admittedly, Renfree’s injury history is a bit iffy; he’s limited at the OTAs because of another. If he can get and stay healthy, look for him to make quite an impression in the near—and distant—future.
Falcons fans are still clamoring for a veteran quarterback to be added to the roster ‘just in case.’ Understandable, but sometimes there is a little too much emphasis placed on the nightmare scenario. There’s no time like the present to start prepping Renfree for the future, and it will be interesting to see how he compares with Ryan and Davis.
