Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Preview: Ben Bass
When Jerry Jones spoke about the defensive line being one of the strengths for the Dallas Cowboys very few people understood what he meant. Dallas does have talent along their defensive line but not fans believed they needed more youth moving forward in their new 4-3 alignment. If offseason practices and OTA’s mean anything, a little known defensive lineman maybe providing the youth and maybe making Jones out to be a genius.
According to multiple sources, including Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com, defensive tackle Ben Bass has been one of the highlights on defense for the Cowboys in mini-camp. The second-year player has stood out because of his size, strength and quickness, and Archer reports that Bass was “all over the field, penetrating, getting to the quarterback for a sack, blowing up running plays and even forcing an interception” during yesterday’s practice.
The strong showing yesterday backs up a solid day on Tuesday where Bass also disrupted several plays and tipped a few more passes at the line of scrimmage. Bass’ height, he’s 6-5, and quickness off of the ball lead to some of the tipped throws but his arm length is one of the major reasons he deflects so many balls as well.
This praise is nothing new for Bass though, the undrafted free agent opened eyes during training camp last season but fizzled out as the summer when on. The Cowboys kept Bass around and he managed to play in two games until an ankle injury ended his season in December. It appears as though he’s grown over the course of the offseason and it’s possible the 4-3 alignment is better fit for Bass, which could also be why he’s thriving. No matter what the reason is, it’s clear that Ben Bass is making a strong push heading towards training camp and he’s player Cowboys fans should take notice of.
The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of big names along their defensive line and Ben Bass is trying to make sure that his name becomes as big as theirs. Training camp is just over a month away; remember the name Ben Bass.
