Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Profile: James Hanna
It would have been very easy for James Hanna to pull a Patrick Crayton-like tantrum following the 2013 NFL Draft.
He could have pouted, moaned and complained about the Dallas Cowboys’ selection of tight end Gavin Escobar in the second round of the Draft. However, instead of feeling disheartened, Hanna is enthusiastic about what his role will be within the Cowboys’ offense.
“As practice has gone on, I feel like I’ve got a chance to get on the field quite a bit,” Hanna said.
In 2012, Hanna wasn’t rated highly coming out of Oklahoma because there were questions about his blocking and pass-catching ability. The Cowboys took a chance on Hanna in the sixth round of the 2012 Draft, and although it took a while to get him on the field, he showed flashes of brilliance as the season progressed.
During the offseason Hanna has been working hard to improve his strength and improved his route running and it’s showing. So far through OTAs and minicamp Hannah has been the solid No.2 tight end behind All-Pro tight end Jason Witten and has been impressive according to Bryan Broaddus.
“I really have liked what I have seen with James Hanna, but I believed that Hanna was going to have a breakout season even before they drafted Escobar,” Broaddus said on DallasCowboys.com “They both can get up the field, and their hands will allow them to make plays.”
I’m excited to see how the Cowboys offensive coaches plan to use Hanna, Escobar and Witten. In particular, I want to see how they use Hanna’s speed; In case you hadn’t heard he ran a 4.49, 40-yard dash at the Combine in 2012, that’s a better time than 34 of the running backs that were invited to the Combine this year.
