Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles the Answer?
The Quarterback battle at Philadelphia Eagles headquarters has been an interesting one. One man who had by all accounts an impressive mini camp and OTA period especially towards the tail end was Nick Foles.
Foles is a big, strong-armed kid in his second season out of Arizona and showed flashes of brilliance in his brief time as a starter last season. He does need to work on his deep ball accuracy but the kid has a strong pocket presence at 6-foot-5 and can really make all the throws necessary to be successful in any offensive system. He also seems to have a solid head on his shoulders always saying the right things to the media and his football IQ, pre-snaps reads, and feel for the offense were well beyond the normal rookie last season.
Foles is well entrenched in what looks like a three-man race between himself, Michael Vick and newcomer Matt Barkley. Foles had the strongest spring camp of the three consistently moving the ball down the field and scoring points. While this is nice the real test will come when the pads come out and he starts taking licks from NFL-calibre defenders in training camp and the preseason.
Foles is a tough kid as he showed when he played an entire second half last year with a broken hand and didn’t complain or use it as an excuse once afterwards. He seems to fit Chip Kelly’s offense better than Vick in the sense that he makes quicker decisions and is better at deciphering and reading defenses especially before the snap. The Eagles certainly moved the football better last season when he was under center.
Take one glance at Foles and he reminds some of Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco as he is a big strong armed kid that can make all the throws. He had his ups and downs last season as is expected of a rookie signal caller. I believe if he puts it all together, he could be a special talent at the most critical position on the field for the Eagles for years to come.
