Seems like it would be unthinkable for the Baltimore Ravens to possibly cut ties with either Terrell Suggs or Haloti Ngata after the 2013 season, but is it a totally unreasonable question to ask?
Suggs and Ngata have been perennial Pro Bowlers almost their entire careers. The 2012 season was a down year as both guys were dealing with injuries. If the 2013 season is a repeat for either Suggs or Ngata, then the question must be asked if it’s time to cut ties.
The salary cap world of the NFL is a cruel and unforgiving one. Ngata and Suggs will take up a huge chunk of the precious cap space in 2014. Ngata will count for around $16 million and Suggs is somewhere around the $12 million range. The cap should be around $123 million for 2014, so for those of you who can’t do the math Suggs and Ngata will take up 23% of the cap.
If you go by offseason activities then Suggs would be the guy less likely to be cut. He’s looked really sharp at mini camps, which has been a cause for optimism. Ngata, on the other hand, is still injured and looks like maybe he’s taken a few late night trips to McDonald’s with Courtney Upshaw.
Now of course if both guys return to their previous Pro Bowl forms then this entire question will be a moot point. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway, but as we’ve seen over the years the Ravens aren’t afraid to let the big names like Ed Reed walk. This could very well be a make or break year for Ngata and Suggs. If you take up that much cap space you better damn well be worth it.
