Philadelphia Eagles’ 7th-Round Pick Jordan Poyer Out To Prove Scouts Wrong
Let’s take a look at Jordan Poyer, the Philadelphia Eagles‘ seventh-round pick — 218th overall – of the 2013 NFL Draft. Before the NFL Combine, Poyer was targeted as a second-round or third-round pick by experts. One scout’s take from CBSSportsline.com stated:
“Balanced athlete with good closing burst. Tough and competes with very good eye discipline. Sets the edge and works hard to shed, playing stronger than he looks. Gets physical and matches up well with bigger receiver.”
At 6-foot, 191 pounds, Poyer was a consensus All-American in 2012 and finished second in the nation with seven interceptions. So why did he slip so far?
Poyer, a cornerback out of Oregon State, had an awful combine. He ran a 4.65 40-yard dash, and he bench pressed 225 pounds only eight times. Eagles fans know what good days at the NFL Combine means drafting Jon Harris and Mike Mamula in the first round. I understand that the Combine is important especially for guys coming out of small schools.
However, you can’t judge a player on just a workout. You have to watch game tape and see if the player has instincts; that is how you judge a player, and I am sure the Eagles and most NFL teams do that.
The one thing that I read a lot about Poyer is that he has good football instincts and is a “thinker” on the field. Poyer told Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com:
“I think I understand the game of football 100 times more than a lot of players do. I understand my body. I understand who I’m going against.”
Poyer also had a message for the rest of the league: he won’t forget who passed on him. You have been warned, NFL. Here’s hoping that the kid can just make the team.
