Will Green Bay Packers’ Brad Jones Be Able to Fill Desmond Bishop’s Shoes?
Several Green Bay Packers fans are still in disbelief that the organization would part ways with inside linebacker Desmond Bishop. There is no question he was a rising star on the team and still has a few good years left in him. However, the Packers are content with relying on Brad Jones to fill Bishop’s shoes for the 2013 NFL season.
The 27-year-old had the most productive season of his career last year in which he posted 77 total tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble in 16 games. He also managed to record 15 total tackles in two playoff games.
Jones certainly does not appear to be as talented as Bishop is when it comes to playing the inside linebacker position. However, there is plenty to like about the four-year player. For instance, he does not cost nearly as much money, which is a huge plus for an organization that has to pay out some big contracts to keep star players. Not to mention, he is a few years younger, which means he could have more upside at this point.
In fact, many believe Jones will be the next rising star on Green Bay’s defense as the Packers expect big things out of him next season. If he continues to work hard during the summer on not missing as many tackles, he should be leaps and bounds better than he was last year. Obviously, Green Bay cannot afford to have a player in the middle of the field missing tackles left and right as that has been a big concern over the past two seasons. One has to wonder if he has already managed to improve on his biggest weakness considering the Packers decided to put him in the driver seat for a starting spot.
Fans should expect big things from Jones, especially after Green Bay has shown so much confidence in him by releasing Bishop. In fact, do not be surprised if he is one of the top playmakers on defense in 2013.
