The nationwide obsession with the NFL in the United States is fascinating. It’s the only sport where a mediocre player can make a comment in the dead of the offseason and it’s immediately critiqued by millions of fans.
Captain Munnerlyn was recently re-signed by the Carolina Panthers, but never in his four-year tenure with the franchise has he done something so bone headed. No. 41 has been effective at cornerback in recent years, but the former seventh-round pick is biting off more than Carolina can chew with these comments:
“I feel like we can be the top defense in NFL football.”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to shoot down enthusiasm by any stretch of the imagination. However, the Panthers have not yet earned the right to proclaim themselves as a top-notch defensive unit. I know Panthers fans are burning me at the stake saying things like “Hello? Luke Kuechly and John Beason — championship!”
Let’s pump the breaks here.
Carolina has a record of 15-33 in the last three seasons combined. Newsflash: a powerhouse defense doesn’t get pummeled on a yearly basis and lose twice as many games as it wins. Besides, the big-bad Beason has missed 27 games in the last two years which means he isn’t even worth talking about heading into 2013-14. Instead, the Panthers’ faithful should talk about the team’s defense allowing 363 points last season which ranks 18th among NFL teams.
Even still, this bold prediction from Munnerlyn just made Ron Rivera‘s seat even hotter than it already was.
